Over the past few months we’ve fallen in love with a duo from Vienna – Anna Müller and Paul Wallner aka HVOB (‘Her Voice Over Boys’). It’s hard not to when they’ve been releasing beautiful electronica such as tracks ‘Dogs’ and ‘Jack’. So when Anna emailed us to tell us they were releasing a debut album soon we got rather excited. The album has just recently released in Europe and the UK release is scheduled 8/4/13 – HVOB have kindly sent us a preview which has surpassed our already high expectations.
Lasting 119 minutes and made up of 12 tracks, the pair have certainly been busy creating material. They have a really distinct sound that is prominent on their two releases to date – atmospheric, bouncy melodies with soft beats, piano riffs and beautifully soothing vocals provided by Anna herself. Each track is unique yet their signature sound remains strong throughout and subtly flows through the album.
HVOB really did put their best foot forward with the earlier release of ‘Dogs’ and ‘Jack’ and fair play to them. These tracks are brilliant examples of what they bring to the electronica genre and have helped to build well deserved hype around their debut album. ‘Pay As You Go Mobile Phone’ is another favourite of ours and an unexpected pleasure came in the form of their cover of ‘Always Like This’ (the original from Bombay Bicycle Club); great to hear HVOB take on this feel good track. The album closes with up tempo track ‘Ocean Bed’ which demonstrates the diverse sound that these guys are able to create – it shows a heavier & darker side of the duo that’s full of warping bass, drops, progression and energy.
5/5 – a stunning and original debut. On sale now via iTunes for our European readers… the rest of us will have to sit patiently.
