This was my second trip out to the White Isle this year, but this time only for two nights, and possibly the two best successive nights for techno on the island: ENTER. and Music On. Both parties are only three years old but have contributed to the increase in technos popularity on Ibiza along with Sven Vath’s long standing and impeccable Cocoon on Monday nights, so expectations were high!
We kicked off with Richie Hawtin’s ENTER. (mustn’t forget the obligatory full stop!!) at Space which was in its 11th week. The party starts in the Sake. Bar, where Richie himself serves punters sake cocktails to world class headliners (check out our photo with the man himself below!). This week it was a double bill of live acts from the Minus cohort; Gaiser and Matador. My advice, get there early, as the headliners for Sake. bar start at 10pm, it’s basically a mini pre-party. On to Space and the main floor hosted Dubfire and Richie Hawtin, both of whom destroyed the dance floor with their signature heavy, dismantled techno. Hawtin in particular seemed to excel, playing at a standard I hadn’t heard for a while. We also found time to head over to the Terrace to catch Nina Kraviz play one of her sensationally exploratory sets. But, it is worth having a good roam, as the bill posters say, ‘Explore. Discover.’ (more full stops!) because there are all sorts of genuinely exciting things going on off the dance floor too. Check out the Mind. Room for some experimental and ambient electronica or, go and check out Ean Golden’s (of DJ Techtools fame) interactive table where you can collaborate with others to control individual loops of music and experience other music technologies.
ENTER. uses the free roaming feel of Space to excellent advantage and feels slick and polished without being too in your face or pushy. It’s great to see Hawtin himself get so involved too, from hanging out in the Mind. room, to serving sake. Hats off to the ENTER. team for all the thought and hard work that has gone into this seriously good party.
The following night was Music On. I’ve been meaning to go to Marco Carola’s Amnesia party for a while now (and even experienced a mild melt down earlier this year when I was unable to go because of a poorly timed return flight home!) so I was really glad to finally make it. My previous experience of Amnesia is exclusively limited to the awesome Cocoon Monday nights so having the headliner play the clubs huge Terrace room was a new experience. Dancing in the morning sun to Carola was great fun and the crowd were really getting into it. But, my biggest revelation was the line-up in the Club room. Having heard little of Carlo Leo and nothing of Monika Kruse I was totally blow away by their sets (and, as a massive fan of Untold’s Hemlock Imprint, was sufficiently ecstatic when Carlo Leo dropped Randomer’s gruesome dance floor smasher ‘Bring’!). Both brought a no-nonsense techno edge to the night which was infectious to the point of pandemic, with sharpened hats and huge kicks being very much the order of the night. What I have to admire about Carola’s party more than anything, is the simplicity. Unlike ENTER., Music On gets straight to business and is the perfect party to get lost on the dance floor at.
ENTER. and Music On are two very different but excellent parties which I have added to my list for next year’s season. Check them out if you haven’t already!
Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to the ENTER. team who were excellent hosts, you know who you are.
