KITTENCAST 0413 – MIXED BY COCO COLE

kittencast 1112

This month is our tenth Kittencast and it comes from radio personality, Black Butter promoter and DJ – Coco Cole. We love Coco’s mix – it’s eclectic with a track listing that’s packed with bass, deep house and techno – there’s even a secret track that’s yet to be released on Black Butter.  It features some tracks that we really love on this blog (with Rumah’s ‘Vex’ making it’s second appearance on a Kittencast).  We caught up with Coco, so read on to find out some more and stream her mix below…

Who is Coco Cole?
A little concoction born from rural soils, spiced with a 90s upbringing, teenage rebellion sensibilities, lashings of peace and love and pumped by a constant quest for deep, dark, bass driven music.

Who are your influences/what’s your style?
I’m actually very influenced by people who have nothing to do with the type of music I play. I find paying attention to people in the same field as me makes me loose focus and originality… it can also be incredibly intimidating!
Sooo I draw a lot of influence from art and culture in general. My friends and the people I work with are incredibly influential; they are ridiculously hard-working, creative and driven. They’re all excellent blaggers too! ha! Musically and creatively The Knife, Little Dragon, Lauryn Hill and CocoRosie are a massive influence. I often listen to them to ground myself. On that note, I’m also very influenced by my 15 yr old self. In my naivity, I was so confident, ambitious and always creating back then. I thought I was the dogs bollocks so I gave everything a go, whereas now I work with a lot of musical geniuses so its hard when I have them to compare myself with. So I quite like to remind myself every now and then of that ruthless teenager.. I thought I could take the world on.
Big ups have to go to Annie Mac & Peter Tong who have traversed the worlds of radio and DJing whilst maintaining their integrity and positioning themselves as pioneers of various musical trends and scenes. Very admirable.
What you listening to on repeat atm?
On repeat. Constantly.
- The Knife – A Tooth for An Eye
- 2ndSun – Bespoked
- Prince – Controversy
- George Fitzgerald – Thinking of You
- A forthcoming Black Butter track [last tune in the mix ;) ]
What would you do as a Techno Kitten for the day?
I’d purr on down to wherever Nina Kravis was and just sit on her lap getting stroked all day. Safe.

ALBUM REVIEW: BLACK BUTTER SPREAD LOVE VOL 2

BLKBTR-SLCD02

Black Butter Records is a label that we well and truly love. It’s home to Kidnap Kid, Rudimental and a whole host of other brilliant artists such as My Nu Leng, Clean Bandit and Gorgon City. All of these have that great bass, garage house sound that you associate with Black Butter.

You may have been aware that they have been giving away a load of free downloads over the past few months as part of their ‘Black Butter Spread Love’ campaign (we featured a few of them). Well now the label has packed all these together into a tasty little compilation aptly named ‘Black Butter Spread Love Compilation Vol.2’.

It kicks off strongly with four remixes of Rudimentals ‘Spoons’ - bassy, garage vibes straight from the off . The Woz Remix has to be our favorite of the four as it’s hard to deny this is one hell of a remix with the added melody really making this mix standout.

Bass lovers will enjoy the tracks included from My Nu Leng and 3hrs, with the latter offering a house/bass feel similar to SCUBA. Black Butter has also included two big ass tracks from DEVoloutionhouse vibes oozing from ‘If you Believe’ and a grimier bassy edge from ‘Listen to the Badman’.

4/5All in a great compilation of some hot garage/house/bass tracks. It would be pretty sweet if there was a continuous mix too, although there’s probably a few too many from each artist to make that a worthy addition.

Black Butter Spread Love Volume 2 is available for download here and you can also stream a preview below.

EP REVIEW: FARBFILM

farbfilm

Officially the first new artist to be signed to Apollonia, Daze Maxim releases his ‘Farbfilm’ EP.  The self-titled opener is a beast of a track packed with plenty of warping bass, melodic synth notes and enough hi-hats to keep any party going.  Farbfilm also gets the remix treatment from Soundorom himself, adding deeper percussion, sporadic high hats and some hypnotizing notes that give it a tech twist.  Maxim has also included minimal track ‘Tableara’ which will make this EP will appeal to techno and house lovers alike.
