Detroit classics live on your laptop!

Mixmag Live’s ninth event sees techno legend Carl Craig taking over one of our fave East London joints, Village Underground, for a special night of Detroit classics. Support comes from Paul Woolford, Glimpse, Adeline and Jonny Cade. If you can’t make it in person- log onto the Mixmag Live site on Friday night 6pm GMT and watch it on screen, up loud with a beer in hand pretending you’re there. No sweat involved. To get us in the mood we’re listening to a Carl Craig classic ‘Sandstorms’ below.

Buy tickets here.

PS. We know Carl Craig likes cats better than dogs really so we shopped our faces over that little mutt.

Event Review: Holy Other

Holy Other launched his debut album ‘Held’ last night at Village Underground- easily one of the best medium sized music venues in London. We got there in time to catch the second support act, Tri Angle label mate, Vessel who was well under way with some slow clunky industrial techno building up into something faster and more pounding. A great introduction to the moody sound of the night and now on our ‘one to watch’ radar.

A hoodless Holy Other took to the stage to play live, mixing his new material with tracks from his EP ‘With U’. He artfully kept the pace exciting taking us from slow and atmospheric, the crowd all nodding heads in unison, to bassy and melodic getting everyone moving a bit more and then slowing it right back down again. All set against a perfectly fitting backdrop of minimal black and white visuals, Holy Other’s signature euphoria and bass sounded beautiful on the venues precision sound system. The reluctant star made a sharp exit leaving a delighted crowd feeling like they had experienced something ethereal and really quite special.

Held is out now. Buy it here.

Holy Kittens

Woohoo we’ve been waiting for this! Tri Angle Records have posted the debut album from Holy Other ‘Held’ on Soundcloud – thank you Tri Angle! It’s dreamy, eerie, atmospheric and and beautiful. Our favourite tracks are ‘Inpouring’ for a slow sexy build up and the serene ‘Past Tension’. It’s as good as we were hoping it would be and we’ve already pre-ordered our copy.

We’re off to see Holy Other play his new sounds next Wednesday at East London’s Village Underground. The event has already sold out but if you haven’t got a ticket we’ll be posting photo’s and a review right here so keep checking in.

Held is released on 27 August. Pre-order on Bleep here.

Let’s get minimal

The first time we heard of Matador (a new-ish member of the Minus family) was at the Mixmag New Horizons party we went to in February.  His set was part of a night at Village Underground in East London where he was followed by the one and only Richie Hawtin.  For us Matador’s set was exactly what we were expecting from the night – it’s minimal, upbeat and there are a lot of interesting effects used to transform each track to deliver something pretty unique.  This set is a great introduction to Matador, a new Techno Kitten favourite that we will definitely be keeping an eye on…
